The Gocta Waterfall, located in the Amazonas region of Peru, is one of the tallest waterfalls in the world, cascading down a spectacular 771 meters (2,531 feet). For adventurous travelers, there are two principal approaches to hiking to this natural wonder: the San Pablo Approach and the Chachapoyas Approach.
The San Pablo Approach is often considered the more popular route. This trail begins in the small village of San Pablo and offers a well-marked path that leads through lush cloud forests and picturesque landscapes. The hike is approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) one way and can take around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
One of the highlights of this approach is the chance to encounter local flora and fauna, including various species of orchids, hummingbirds, and other wildlife. Along the way, hikers can also immerse themselves in the local culture, as you may meet friendly villagers who can share stories about the area.
Alternatively, the Chachapoyas Approach starts from the town of Chachapoyas. This route is slightly longer, covering about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles), and typically takes around 3-4 hours. While this trail is less traveled, it offers a more rugged hiking experience, with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and the opportunity to witness the rich biodiversity of the region.
Regardless of the route you choose, be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, carry plenty of water, and bring a camera to capture the stunning vistas. It is also advisable to start your hike early in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat and to maximize your chances of seeing a beautiful rainbow over the waterfall.
