When traveling in Peru, especially to iconic places like Machu Picchu, it's essential to be aware of ATM availability and usage. ATMs are widely available in major cities like Cusco and in the Sacred Valley, but their presence diminishes significantly in remote areas.

Cusco has numerous ATMs, primarily located in the main square, Plaza de Armas, and popular tourist areas. Always use ATMs located in bank branches or reputable businesses to ensure your safety and security.

Most ATMs in Peru accept international cards, particularly Visa and MasterCard. However, it’s advisable to check with your bank beforehand regarding any fees for international withdrawals and to notify them of your travel plans to avoid your card being blocked.

While ATMs may dispense Peruvian soles (PEN), be mindful of withdrawal limits, which can vary from location to location. In Cusco, you may be able to withdraw up to 700 soles per transaction, but this may be less in smaller towns.

In Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu, there are a few ATMs, but it’s wise to withdraw cash beforehand, as these machines can run out of money during peak tourist seasons.

Additionally, credit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas, but carrying cash is crucial for small purchases or in more remote locations.

Be cautious of fees associated with foreign transactions and ATM withdrawals. Consider bringing small denominations as vendors may not have change for large bills.

Lastly, familiarize yourself with the local currency and exchange rates to make informed decisions while traveling.
